This paper deals with memory cultures, identity formation, and the challenges of establishing a continuous history. In Margaret Atwood’s MaddAddam trilogy these factors are dramatised via the extinction of almost all carriers of memory, leaving the remaining survivors in charge of cultural memory. Beginning from there, this paper looks at the importance of a recipient for necessary identity formation in the novels. With the help of Maurice Halbwachs’ and Jan and Aleida Assmann’s research the mechanisms and dynamics of cultural memory are examined as well as the influence of sites of memory, looked at with Pierre Nora’s concept of lieu de mémoire.
